Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. DuVernay worked as a night nurse, allowing her aunt time that she needed during the working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread political activism. DuVernay was raised by parents who were well-informed and taught her how she could use the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay who was born together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was in her the college. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash at the home by a member jury. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, she determined to make a move in public relations. DuVernay was hired right out of college as a junior publicist at a small studio. In 1999, she established her own private company for public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
